Six of the world's seven species of marine turtles can be found in Australia's ocean areas and all of these are threatened with extinction. All species are slow growing and take decades to reach maturity but escalating mortality due to human activities is seeing fewer and fewer marine turtles living long enough to reproduce.
Together with local communities, fishers, industry leaders and scientists, WWF is working to conserve marine turtles. WWF's turtle conservation programs address the many threats, including oils pills, entanglement in marine debris, man-made contamination, disturbance of nesting beaches and near-shore feeding grounds, unregulated fishing and bycatch (species caught unintentionally by fishing gear).
